Yann Tiersen (* 23. Juni 1970 in Brest) ist ein französischer Komponist und Musiker.
Geboren wurde Yann Tiersen am 23. Juni 1970 in Brest in der Bretagne und wuchs in Rennes auf. Heute lebt er in Paris. Seit seinem 6. Lebensjahr spielt er Geige und Klavier. Als Jugendlicher spielte er in einigen lokalen Post-Punk-Bands Gitarre, nach eigenen Angaben wesentlich beeinflusst von Joy Division und The Stooges. Er studierte an den Musikhochschulen in Rennes, Nantes und Boulogne und gilt als begabter Multi-Instrumentalist.
Von vielen Menschen wird die einfache und getragene Musik Tiersens als „melancholisch, aber irgendwie auch fröhlich“ empfunden. Der Musikstil lässt sich am besten als Kombination von französischer Folkmusik, Chanson, Straßenmusik, Musette-Walzer mit avantgardistischen Rock- und Pop- sowie minimalistischen und klassischen Einflüssen, teilweise versehen mit orchestralen Streicherarrangements, beschreiben.
